National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET is a qualifying cum entrance exam for students who wish to pursue undergraduate medical course (MBBS) or dental course (BDS) or a postgraduate course (MD / MS) in government and private medical colleges in India. NEET - UG, for MBBS and BDS courses, will be conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). NEET - UG will replace the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and all individual MBBS exams conducted by states or colleges themselves also conducted by CBSE.
The first exam will be held on 5th May, 2013. Under-graduate courses at the AIIMS in New Delhi and Post-graduate Institute for Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh may be outside the NEET's purview as these two institutes were set up by separate laws, which need to be amended in Parliament to introduce the new system.
NEET was proposed to be held from 2012 onwards, however owing to several reasons the CBSE & Medical Council of India has deferred NEET by a year. The test was announced by the Government across India for students seeking admission into Medicine, both Undergraduate and Postgraduate.
